How to cartoon yourself from a photo

To cartoon your own photo, keep the first two sentences of the first prompt and rewrite the last one with the details of your picture. That last line is what keeps the cartoon looking like you rather than like a stranger in the same sweater. The art styles category in the prompts library has more directions to borrow from.

Cartoon avatars and caricatures

A cartoon avatar is the most common reason people cartoon themselves, and it needs three things a full scene does not: a head and shoulders frame, a centered composition on a plain background, and the 1:1 aspect ratio picked in the menu. Attach a selfie and add “keep my facial features and hairstyle recognisable”. The AI avatar generator page covers profile pictures in every other style too.

For a caricature, ask for exaggeration explicitly and say where it goes. “A bigger head and a huge grin” is a caricature. “Exaggerate everything” is a different person. The cafe example above pushes only the head, the grin and the nose, which is why it still reads as the same man.

Tips for better cartoons

• Say “2D” and “flat colours”. Without them the result tends to drift toward soft 3D rendering or semi-realistic digital painting.
• Ask for bold outlines by name. “Bold black outlines” is the single phrase that most makes an image read as a cartoon.
• Describe the expression. Cartoons live on exaggerated faces: grumpy, startled, beaming. A neutral expression gives a flat result.
• Avoid anime words if you want a cartoon. “Large expressive eyes” and “cel shading” pull the image toward anime. If that is the look you are after, photo to anime and the anime generator are written for it.
• Say exactly what any text should read. Generated signs come out as whatever the model invents, like the “MAIL” cap and the cafe sign in the examples. For precise lettering, use GPT-Image-2.
